If you were to type "education" into google, the online dictionary would pull up two definitions:
- The process of receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a school or university.
- An enlightening experience.
It's almost a shame that there is even the first definition. As a society, we have grown accustomed to the understanding that education is a system, something someone or something does to us. Our attitude toward what education is, therefore, tainted. We go get an education to learn something, then our education ends and we are suddenly qualified to do something.
Albert Einstein described best what education should be:
Education is a continual, enlightening experience. It's not something we do, it's something we are continually doing. Educating the mind requires a time commitment. It takes focus. It also happens to be the one thing most successful people have in common.
